Cognitive Disposition, Self-Determination and Attitude to Keyboarding as Determinants of Students’ Achievement in Word Processing in Colleges of Education, South-West, Nigeria (Published)

The declining trend in performance of Business Education students in word processing has become worrisome to stakeholders most especially business education lecturers. This study therefore examined cognitive disposition, self-determination, and attitude to keyboarding as determinants of students’ achievement in word processing in colleges of education in South-West, Nigeria. This study adopted a descriptive survey research design type. A sample of 1,346 students was selected through stratified random sampling technique from a population of 6,035 college of education students in South-West, Nigeria. Five research instruments were used for data collection.  They are: Demographic Data Inventory, Cognitive Disposition Inventory (a=0.89), Self-Determination Scale (a=0.86), Attitude to Keyboarding Scale (a=0.76) and Word Processing Achievement Test (a=0.89). The null hypotheses were tested using Multiple Regression Analysis at 0.05 level of significance. The finding revealed that cognitive disposition, self-determination, and attitude to keyboarding significantly predict students’ academic achievement in Word Processing (F(3, 1342) = 31.807, p <.05). In the same vein, cognitive disposition (b= .317, t=21.605, p < .05), self-determination (b=.226, t=12.449, p < .05), and attitude to keyboarding (b=.208, t=10.194, p < .05) have relative contributions to the prediction of academic achievement in Word Processing among the students. It was therefore recommended, among others, that Business Education Lecturers in Colleges of Education should identify those strong cognitive disposition patterns in their classes and utilize fitting approaches to accommodate individual cognitive disposition preferences in their pedagogy. Educators should continually promote self-determination via both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation by helping learners to focus not only on the extrinsic rewards they gain after they accomplish tasks but to also inculcate the intrinsic value in their learning of Word Processing.

The study was carried out to examine learners’ attitude and Senior Secondary School Students’ Achievement in Mathematics in Bayelsa State, Nigeria. Two research questions were posed and two corresponding hypotheses were equally formulated. The study adopted an ex-post-facto research design. The population of the study consisted of all the 10,818 S.S.2 students in the eight local government areas in Bayelsa State whereas the sample size of the study was 480 obtained through cluster random sampling techniques. Two instruments were used to obtain data for the study which include Mathematics Attitude Inventory (MAI) and Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT). The Mathematics Achievement Test was validated by two senior secondary school teachers while the reliability of the instrument was 0.77 obtained using alternate form reliability method. Other instrument was standardized instrument whose validation and reliability have been established over time. Mean, standard deviation and t-test statistics were used to answer the research questions and test the hypotheses respectively. Findings of the study revealed that there is a significant difference in the academic performance of students with positive and negative attitudes in mathematics in Bayelsa State secondary schools. The study recommended amongst others that Mathematics teachers should develop a very friendly attitudes to students during lesson, this could motivate students who possess low or no interest to mathematics.

The study was conducted among 200 women attending fertility clinic in General hospital, Calabar in Cross River state. Semi structured interview questionnaire was administeredto 200 consecutive infertile female patients (between February and September,2018) at the General Hospital Calabar who agreed to participate in the study after counseling. Participants were purposively recruited and data collected by individual face-to-face in-depth interviews. The data generated was analyzed by simple percentages, descriptive statistics and simple correlation analysis at 5% probability level. Knowledge of child adoption was relatively very high (92.6%) but out of which only 2.0% of the respondents had adopted a child while 34.5% were willing to adopt in the near future if their condition of childlessness persist.T he correlation coefficient for child adoption was significantly higher, positive and strong in patients are childless and who had suffered infertility for more than 6 years (r=0.92, P<0.001), those with secondary/ tertiary education (r=0.90, P<0.001) and in those with no living child (r=0.89, P<0.001) compared to the non-significant correlation coefficient of those whose aim of adoption was to satisfy their need for domestic chores (r – 0.21;P>0.001) and those whose need a child for errand (r –0.32; P>0.001).Majority of the respondents(77.3%) were not willing to adopt a child and their main reason was that child adoption would not allow them fulfill their conception role as women in addition to the long procedures involve in child adoption. Knowledge of child adoption was high among the respondents but the willingness to adopt a child was low due to the fact that it would not allow them fulfill their conception role as women. There is need to educate and encourageour infertile patients to utilize this cheaper and available option of managinginfertility. There is also the need for public education and special counselling session for husbands and other family members on child adoption as an alternative solution for infertility and childlessness. The success of marriages has largely been premeditated on child bearing in most African society and oftentimes women are at the receiving end of childlessness with possible psychological and physical trauma.

The study adopts a descriptive survey design. This study sources data from 314 students enrolled for Library Science, Information, and Communications Technology in three different universities. The result shows a meaningful predictive effect of writing attitude and environmental factors on project writing performance of students. The students also perceived that their knowledge can be updated regularly through ecological actions. Selected Variables Influencing Undergraduate Students’ Attitude toward Educational Research Writing In University Of Port Hacourt, Rivers State, Nigeria (Published)

The study investigated selected variables influencing undergraduate students’ attitude toward educational research writing in Faculty of Education, University of Port Harcourt. Four research questions and three hypotheses tested at 0.05 alpha level guided the study. The study adopted an ex-post facto research design. A sample of 561 final year undergraduate students was drawn from the population through stratified random sampling technique based on the six departments of the Faculty. The four instruments used for data collection were Research self-concept Scale (RSS); Research Anxiety Scale (RAS), Research Achievement Motivation Scale (RAMS) and Research Attitude Questionnaire (RAQ). These were validated by experts in Educational Psychology, measurement and evaluation. The reliability coefficients of RSS, RAS, RAMS and RAQ were 0.72, 0.69, 0.81 and 0.76 respectively which were determined through Cronbach Alpha technique for internal consistency of the instruments. Data collected were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and t-test of independent sample means. The results revealed that self-concept, research anxiety and achievement motivation significantly influence attitude of undergraduate students toward educational research writing. Based on these results, recommendations were made including that school guidance counselors should endeavour to counsel students with low self-concept, low achievement motivation and high anxiety pertaining their academic progress especially in educational research writing.

Analysis of the Attitude of College Students towards Mobile Phone Usage in Nigeria (Published)

This study was conducted to investigate the attitudes of college students toward mobile phone usage in Nigeria. Six hundred and forty randomly selected 300- and 400- level students of the University of Ibadan, Oyo State and the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State were involved in the study. The study was conducted in a classroom environment during the schools’ continuous assessment (CA) week. After information was collected from the students, their test scores were obtained from their faculties. The test scores were compared to the scores obtained from the questionnaires. It was realized that the academic discipline of the college students as well as their area of residence do not make them perceive or use their mobile phones differently. Also, gender was found to be an important determinant of mobile phone usage among the students. In addition, no significant relationship was established between the mobile phone usage and their academic performance. It was then recommended that operational involvement and practical prevention programs, which would discourage mobile phone addiction in students, should be developed and configured in all cell phones. Also, management of colleges must constantly inform and reorient their students about the negative and positive effects of their mobile phone uses. In addition, authorities of the schools as well as policy makers must formulate rules for students to concentrate on their lectures totally without fiddling with their mobile phones during lectures
