Effects of Instructional Strategies and Gender on Junior Secondary School Students’ Achievement in Business Studies in Rivers State, Nigeria (Published)

Business Studies is offered in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) as a subject meant to expose learners to commerce, office management, trade and book keeping. In spite of its importance, performance in the subject is below expectation in Rivers State. Previous studies revealed that brainstorming and field trip will improve learning outcomes but they are rarely used while teaching Business Studies. This study, therefore, determined the effects of brainstorming (BTM), field trip (FTTM), and conventional teaching methods (CM) and gender on secondary school students’ achievement in Business Studies. All the JSS 2 students (467) in the selected schools participated in the study. The treatment lasted for seven weeks. The instrument used was Business Studies Achievement Test (r=0.82), Data collected was analysed using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. There was a significant main effect of treatment on students’ achievement in Business Studies [F(2,131)=26.70, partial η2=0.29]. Participants in FTTM had the highest mean (35.79), followed by BTM (35.71) and CM (27.54). Results revealed that gender did not have a significant main effect on students’ achievement in business studies [F(1,131) =.315, P> .05]. Brainstorming and Field trip teaching methods influenced learning outcomes of students in Business studies in Rivers state but Field trip method was better. Cognitive Disposition, Self-Determination and Attitude to Keyboarding as Determinants of Students’ Achievement in Word Processing in Colleges of Education, South-West, Nigeria (Published)

The declining trend in performance of Business Education students in word processing has become worrisome to stakeholders most especially business education lecturers. This study therefore examined cognitive disposition, self-determination, and attitude to keyboarding as determinants of students’ achievement in word processing in colleges of education in South-West, Nigeria. This study adopted a descriptive survey research design type. A sample of 1,346 students was selected through stratified random sampling technique from a population of 6,035 college of education students in South-West, Nigeria. Five research instruments were used for data collection.  They are: Demographic Data Inventory, Cognitive Disposition Inventory (a=0.89), Self-Determination Scale (a=0.86), Attitude to Keyboarding Scale (a=0.76) and Word Processing Achievement Test (a=0.89). The null hypotheses were tested using Multiple Regression Analysis at 0.05 level of significance. The finding revealed that cognitive disposition, self-determination, and attitude to keyboarding significantly predict students’ academic achievement in Word Processing (F(3, 1342) = 31.807, p <.05). In the same vein, cognitive disposition (b= .317, t=21.605, p < .05), self-determination (b=.226, t=12.449, p < .05), and attitude to keyboarding (b=.208, t=10.194, p < .05) have relative contributions to the prediction of academic achievement in Word Processing among the students. It was therefore recommended, among others, that Business Education Lecturers in Colleges of Education should identify those strong cognitive disposition patterns in their classes and utilize fitting approaches to accommodate individual cognitive disposition preferences in their pedagogy. Educators should continually promote self-determination via both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation by helping learners to focus not only on the extrinsic rewards they gain after they accomplish tasks but to also inculcate the intrinsic value in their learning of Word Processing.

Socio – Economic Marginalization and Youth Restiveness, Impact On Community Development in Nigeria (Published)

This study investigates socio-economic marginalization and youths’ restiveness impact on community development. The study employed content analysis with indepth literature review as methodology. Socioeconomic marginalization is the exclusion of the youth in the social and economic activities of the community and also denying them from benefiting from socio -economic opportunities of the land. The concept of youth restiveness is the unwelcome attitude and behaviour, demonstrating violence and grievances to press home their demands, needs and aspiration. All of these impact community development which represent real change in the life of a community in terms of the people, infrastructure, the environment.  Empirical literatures have investigated the nexus among socio-economic marginalization, youths’ restiveness and their impact on community development and found strong correlations among the variables. Thus, socio-economic marginalization brings about youths’ restiveness which in turn crops up negative impact on community development. This is validated with this studies. To reverse this trend, socio-economic inclusion should be encouraged which will in turn eliminate restiveness of youth and bring about sustainable community development. Thus, this study concludes that, involvement of youth in social and economic activities of the community, opening opportunities for them will curb restiveness and crop up sustainable community development. Therefore, the study recommends that, there should be youth involvement in terms of participation and benefits association with the socio-economic activities of the community.  This will systematically eliminate restiveness and drive community development.
