Politics and University Administration in Nigeria (Published)

Education is a prerequisite for youths to attain quality job, adequate and acceptable achievement. Every political dispensation is expected to provide good and quality education in any state or country. However, it appears that this is not to be, especially in most African countries. Leaders who should focus on quality education of the masses seemed to attach little or no importance to education and this could have great consequences for administration of tertiary institutions. The number of times these institutions were closed down seemed to spell doom for the tertiary and university education sector. It is on the basis of this that this study examined how university administration fared during various political dispensations in Nigeria at any point in time. The study found out that politics had not impacted much on administration of universities in Nigeria. It was therefore recommended that the administration of universities or tertiary institutions should be given the adequate attention and support that they deserve from government at all times. It was also recommended that heads of universities and tertiary institutions should be neutral and stay clear of partisan politics before and during their appointments.

This paper presents both qualitative and quantitative studies on the motivation for teachers teaching in Senior High School located in rural areas and its effects on their willingness to continue staying in those areas in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Two public Senior High Schools in the rural areas of Afigya-Kwabre West district comprising two Headmasters and 120 teachers was selected by the use of purposive and simple random sampling techniques for the study. The study focused on primary data through interview, questionnaire and observation. It was revealed that the significant retention factors are the provision and administration of financial bonuses which include retention/professional allowance and Parents and Teachers Association motivational allowance. On the other hand, the teachers were very unsatisfied with their accommodation, means of transport and criteria for selecting award winners during speech and prize giving days. Therefore, governments and policy makers need to put in place strategies and also implement policies that will serve to improve the working conditions of teachers teaching in rural areas in order to serve as motivation for their retention.

The study is concerned with the administrative and legal perceptive of prayer in Nigeria public schools. 780 school administrators were randomly selected from the public schools in the 3 geo-political regions in the Southern Nigeria. A 20 item questionnaire was designed by the researcher. This was validated by experts in test and evaluation as well as seasoned school administrators in Bayelsa State, Nigeria. The instrument was further tested for reliability using the test-re-test method. The data collected was analysed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient statistics and it was established as 0.82 which shows that the instrument is reliable. The researcher and other research assistants personally administered the questionnaire and the data analysed using the mean and the t-test analysis. From the result and findings, it was observed that most school administrators do not see prayer as a normal school routine but do not have proper knowledge on the legality of enforcing prayer in schools. To the administrators, prayers is for character molding, entertainment and an instrument to instill discipline but the legal perspective is that it must not be forced on the child and must be conducted in line with the fundamental human rights of the child as enshrined in Section 33 – 44 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
