Women Educational Empowerment and Sustainable Political Development of Nigeria: Akwa Ibom State in Perspective (Published)

The study examined women educational empowerment and the sustainable political development of Nigeria. The population consisted of female lecturers from three higher educational institutions in Akwa Ibom State. These include the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State University, Ikot Akpaden; and Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afana Nsit.The cluster sampling technique was used in selecting a sample of 235 respondents out of a population of 2,351 targeted respondents.Two null hypotheses were formulated, based on the specific objectives of the study and tested at the .05 alpha level using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Analysis. Data collection was done with the use of a structured instrument, “Women Empowerment and Sustainable Political Development Questionnaire” (WESPDQ), which was duly validated by experts. The WESPDQ was tested for reliability using the Cronbach alpha approach, with a coefficient of .78 indicating that the instrument was internally consistent. Findings indicated a significant relationship between the two independent variables and the dependent variable respectively. It was, therefore, concluded that women educational empowerment has a significant relationship with the sustainable political development of Nigeria. It was recommended, among other things, that government at all levels (federal, state and local) should formulate policies that seek to empower women educationally to facilitate sustainable political development of the country.

Politics and University Administration in Nigeria (Published)

Education is a prerequisite for youths to attain quality job, adequate and acceptable achievement. Every political dispensation is expected to provide good and quality education in any state or country. However, it appears that this is not to be, especially in most African countries. Leaders who should focus on quality education of the masses seemed to attach little or no importance to education and this could have great consequences for administration of tertiary institutions. The number of times these institutions were closed down seemed to spell doom for the tertiary and university education sector. It is on the basis of this that this study examined how university administration fared during various political dispensations in Nigeria at any point in time. The study found out that politics had not impacted much on administration of universities in Nigeria. It was therefore recommended that the administration of universities or tertiary institutions should be given the adequate attention and support that they deserve from government at all times. It was also recommended that heads of universities and tertiary institutions should be neutral and stay clear of partisan politics before and during their appointments.

Education as an Instrument for Promoting and Sustaining Political Stability in Nigeria (Published)

Politics is omnipotent and omnipresent in the day to day affairs of individuals and institutions of the state and the ability of politics to live up to expectations in overseeing the day to day affairs of members of the society can only be possible if there is stability in the political system. Regrettably the attitudes of Nigerians do not correspond with the high and towering status of politics as a determinant factor in the quality of life and quality of development of a people. Rather than being totally committed by actively participating in politics, majority of Nigerians embrace apathy and other behaviours whose manifestations pose serious threats to stability in the political system. Using the philosophical methods, this paper makes a case on how education through curricular and pedagogical innovations can create awareness, sensitize and stimulate in Nigerians behavivours whose sustenance can promote and lay solid foundations for political stability in Nigeria. The paper among others suggests that teaching Nigerians how to morally play the game of politics according to rules governing the game, making civic education compulsory and teaching learners to be critical, logical and analytical especially on how to build the Nigeria of their dream through politics and participation in politics can be measures for achieving political stability in Nigeria.

Politics of Educational Policies Implementation: Focus On Universal Basic Education in Akwa Ibom State (Published)

The purpose of this paper was to examine politics of educational policies implementation with special focus on the Universal Basic Education (UBE) programme in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Also, the paper aimed at highlighting the influence of politics on administration and full implementation of free and compulsory education in Akwa Ibom State. Historical analysis of educational policies in Nigeria with a particular reference to free and compulsory education was considered. Issues that cause political influence on education and politics in UBE programme implementation in Akwa Ibom were analyzed. This research by implications is justified by the recommended strategies for effective Universal Basic Education programme implementation in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
