Cameroon in the First World War From the dominant geostrategic challenges to environnemental impact ignored (Published)

Through both the empirico-descriptive and deductive approaches, this study aims at showing that Cameroon is both a “colony “and first world war producer and consumer. Regarding the geostrategic challenges that it represented, this country of the Gulf of Guinea was the conspicuous materialization of the export of the great European war to Africa, from the origins to the consequences. Besides, this article discusses an important aspect of this war which has been forgotten; its environmental impact on Cameroon. Based on oral testimonies, war material would be buried in some localities that constituted battlefields between the allied forces and the German army. While opening up avenues for in-depth research, this study makes a non exhaustive inventory of the sites that are likely to undergo the polluting effects of this war in Cameroon.

Investigating the Effects of Urbanization on Environmental Degradation in Yenagoa Metropolis, Bayelsa State, South-South Nigeria (Published)

The study investigated the effect of urbanization on environmental degradation in Yenagoa metropolis, Bayelsa State. The concentric zone model provided the theoretical framework for this study. The correlational study design served as the study design, while probability and non-probability sampling techniques were used for the sampling procedures. Using Taro Yamane formula, the study sampled a total of 339 respondents. Data for the study was gathered through structured questionnaires.  Data collected for the study was subjected to statistical analysis using percentages, frequency distributions table, pie chart, mean, binary logistics regression and Pearson correlation with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0. Based on analysis, the study concluded that rapid urbanization led to housing problem, flooding and poor sanitary conditions. Based on the findings, the study recommended quality housing structure, environmental sanitation and effective urban planning by Yenagoa Capital City Development Authority to prevent degradation of the environment.

The Mediating Effects Of Home Learning On Student Achievement In Mathematics: A Longitudinal Study In Primary Schools In Ghana (Published)

The home learning environment as mediated by parental education and income is an important determinant of child learning outcomes. As part of a longitudinal study on teaching effectiveness in Ghana, this paper examines the joint effects of multiple variables related to  home learning environment that interconnect to impact on child academic performance in mathematics. A representative sample of 73 primary schools in Ghana was selected and written tests in mathematics were administered to all grade 6 students of the school sample both at the beginning and end of the school year 2013–2014. Data on student background factors were also collected. Our analytical techniques (i.e., multilevel modelling) take into account the hierarchical structure of schools (i.e., students nested within classes, and within schools). Controlling for the more basic student background factors, we find that the provision of learning resources at home, whiles ensuring that children are offered learning opportunities after school time were important.  Implications of findings are drawn.

Cross River Tourism, History and Environment: A Marriage Contracted In the Womb of Time (Published)

Today, it can be safely argued that Cross River State is noted more for its tourism enterprise than for anything else. Since 1999 to date, there have been sustained efforts by successive administrations to re-engineer and rebrand the State as a tourism spectacle and hub not just in the Cross River Region but in Nigeria and indeed, the West Africa Sub-region at large. This paper seeks to show that there is an organic and inescapable relationship between Cross River’s current tourism efforts and its history and environment. Put differently, we would attempt to demonstrate that the foundation of Cross River tourism is embedded in its history and environment and it is from these pristine bowels that the current initiatives can truly find rhythm, momentum and relevance.

Dis/Harmony Between Nature and Culture in Herbert De Lisser’s Jane’s Career (Published)

This article explores the broad ecocritical perspectives represented in De lisser’s Jane’s Career (1914). The study is located in the environmental and cultural histories of the Caribbean. It evocates the interrelationships between nature and culture based on the broader view of the concept of ‘environment’  by the second wave ecocritics to make the theory applicable to urban setting. It enables ecocriticism to place human culture in relation to the urban natural world as it goes beyond the nature-culture divide to the ways man and nature are harmoniously constitutive in an environment (built and unbuilt). This is, the environmental thoughts and actions of the characters are interpreted in relation to the exploitation of nature and women, and also, the harmonious coexistence of man with nature. It is discovered through the examination of the nature-culture interrelationship that environmentality is a feature of urban settlement. The analysis done using that tens touches issues of colonialism, environmental, ecofeminism and identity formation in the Caribbean

THE ENVIRONMENT, BIODIVERSITY AND THE BIBLICAL IMPERATIVE OF BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION (Review Completed - Accepted)

The paper represents a synthesis of the scientific and biblical perspectives on the all-important issues of the environment, biodiversity and the necessity of biodiversity conservation. It provides information on why the environment is important to life. It underscores the special importance of biodiversity to humankind. It reviews the various ways biodiversity is being threatened in the planet earth. It provides information on how biodiversity can be effectively managed by humankind at not only the local levels but also at the international level. Besides presenting the scientific view point on all these issues, the paper buttresses the presentation, with the biblical perspective. This is done not only to underscore the importance of effective management of our plant and animal biodiversity, but to let humankind appreciate the fact that the Supreme being who created the planet earth and all that are in it, has it in mind that all our plant and animal biodiversity must be conserved to assure their sustainability on the planet earth.

Representations Of Nature in J. P. Clark’s “Night Rain”: An Eco-Critical Study (Published)

One significant beauty of literature is the openness of this academic discipline. It permits sensible endless debate on issues with a view to reconciling them and to bring out the best from the divided opinions for ultimate use of the most enduring and outstanding perspective from among many. Even before now that world has turned a global village; the geography of our existence allows us to tell our stories because man is heavily connected to his environment. Our culture and all our material creations including literature are therefore reflections of our ecological existence. This paper examines J. P. Clark’s “Night Rain” as a product of the relationship between literature and the environment, and the representation of nature, which make up the environment in a literary work. With the application of Eco-criticism as our theoretical framework, the paper concludes that our lives are not meaningful except they are situated in the cultural context of our environment. Hence, the study and understanding of culture in relation to the environment through literature will help us in solving the challenges of the 21st century.
