Effectiveness of the Strategies used by School Administration in Protecting Children From Physical Abuse in Public Secondary Schools in the Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania (Published)

This study examined the effectiveness of strategies used by school administration in protecting children from physical abuse in public secondary schools in the Kilimanjaro region, Tanzania. This was a study guided by the systems theory and approach by Bertalanffy, (1968). The theory articulates a set of specific structures, functions, capacities, and other related system components including input, process, and output. This study employed convergent mixed methods design which intended to collect both quantitative and qualitative data in one phase. Stratified, convenient, and purposeful sampling techniques were used to determine the study sample which consisted of 427 respondents. Questionnaires and an interview guide were used to collect the required information. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and inferentially using ANOVA.  Tables, charts, narrations, and schemes of code were used to present the study findings. The study findings show that the strategies can be effective if they are used well, the most effective strategies were; Guidance and Counseling, Involvement of Stakeholders, Well informed Administration, and the Use of Child Policy, Law, rule, and reregulation. Other strategies suggested were the introduction of Life skill education, home visitation, and the use of student council.  The study concluded that the strategies used by school administration in protecting children from sexual abuse are effective, however with some challenges that can be solved. The ANOVA findings conclude there are no significant differences between teachers’ mean scores on rating the effective strategies used in protecting children from physical abuse based on years of experience. The study recommends Ministry of Education, Science and Technology should ensure effective and efficient use of existing strategies while ensuring close supervision and monitoring to reduce sexual abuse. But also in-service training should be done for all District Education officers, Heads masters/mistresses, and Discipline masters/mistresses, and lastly, teacher education programs in colleges and universities should be designed to ensure child protection is given priority.

Tone of School Discipline and Level of Morality among Secondary School Students in Calabar Education Zone of Cross River State, Nigeria and Need For Guidance and Counselling Interventions (Published)

The essence of this study was to investigate the influence of tone of school discipline and the level of morality among secondary school students in Calabar education zone of Cross River State, Nigeria. To guide the study, one hypothesis was formulated at 0.05 level of significance, using stratified and simple random sampling. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire titled Tone of School Discipline and Level of Morality among Secondary School Students Questionnaire (TSDLMASSSQ). The instrument had a reliability indices ranging from 0.70 to 0.80, using Chrombach alpha reliability estimate. The study adopted ex-post facto research design and the statistical tool for data analysis were simple linear regression and t-test. The result revealed an R-squared value of .084, which means that about 8.4% of the total variation in the level of morality was explained by the variation in the tone of discipline in the school. The result revealed and F-value of 45.953 (P-value =.000). Thus, the null hypothesis was rejected in favour of the alternative. This means that there is significant influence of tone of discipline in the school on the level of morality among secondary school students. It was recommended that teachers should be counseled not to depend on the use of force, threat and punishment to foster discipline or morals as this may have adverse effect on the level of morality among student. But students should be encouraged to contact their guidance counsellor for professional counselling

The extent to which the Islamic jurisprudence branch of contemporary women’s issues and rulings, is included in the curriculum of religion and Islamic education for the secondary stage (Published)

The study aimed to reveal the extent to which the Islamic jurisprudence branch included the issues and provisions of contemporary women in the curriculum of Islamic education for the secondary stage.  It also aimed to explain what is meant by Islamic education and its characteristics in the school curricula, and to identify the role of the Islamic education curriculum for the secondary stage in building the student’s personality and introducing her to the issues and provisions that concern her at this stage. The two researchers used the content analysis method because it is the most appropriate approach for the subject of the study and the most appropriate to achieve its objectives. The study tool was limited to analyzing the Islamic jurisprudence branch in the Islamic education curriculum for the secondary stage that is approved for teaching in secondary schools in the Arab community in Israel. It is clear from the results of the analysis that the Islamic jurisprudence branch ignored most Issues and rulings related to contemporary women. Its goals and contents have focused on the field of worship without other fields of Islamic jurisprudence such as communications and personal status, and on one aspect of worship represented in the ritual appearance without the social and cosmic appearance.  These results confirm the weakness of the design of the Islamic jurisprudence branch in the Islamic education curriculum for the secondary stage and states how it lacks the legal issues and rulings that the student needs to know.

Evaluating Guidance and Counselling Utilisation among Secondary School Teachers: Rejoinders from Selected Nigerian Schools (Published)

This research contended that Guidance and Counselling transcend provision of helping services for adolescent secondary school students but encompass delivery of such supports to their teachers. It aimed to evaluate whether the latter were utilising the Services, using five research questions. Descriptive survey design was adopted, leading to random sampling of 384 constituents of the target population. A 20 item structured questionnaire (Guidance Utilisation Evaluation Scale for Teachers-GUEST) was developed and administered as research instrument. Responses were projected based on Four Likert Scale type Format, with professionals and pilot tests respectively substantiating instrument’s validity and reliability. Data were analysed using mean scores, ensuing in the  following findings: teachers supposed G and C functions as students’ services and did not utilise them; such functions were not extended to teachers as beneficiaries, but  buddies; teachers merely sought practitioners’ aids for student and school developments; there were dearth of necessary teacher-support resources in school G and C units; absence of sufficient G and C functions consciousness impeded its utilisation among teachers; they were hardly motivated to seek G and C aids from their schools’ practitioners. Ultimately, expansion of the programme’s delineation was proposed for apt erudition of counsellor facilitation and counsellee/client participation.
