Design and Construction of a Locally Fabricated Serigraphy Machine for Curve/Flat Printing Substrates (Published)

The study aimed at designing and producing a serigraphy machine that prints on both curve and flat surfaces. Various methods of printing such as dye sublimation, heat transfer and screen printing are employed to print on fabric and other allied printing substrates in Nigeria. However, screen printing is one of the oldest forms of printing and one of the most popular method. The “Development of a Locally Fabricated Serigraphy Printer for Curve and Flat Surfaces” has become imperative. The sketches were made based on the conceptual idea and were later drawn with the aid 3D application software (Autodesk Fusion 360) installed in the computer system. The 3D drawings were used as guide to construct the serigraphy machine in the workshop. The machine which is manually operated comes with an adjustable squeegee, an adjustable metallic frame which holds the screen during printing, and a spring attached to the frame holder which holds the frame taut during printing without the aid of an assistant. The squeegee can be stationed and moved manually depending on whether the printing being done on curved or flat substrates. The Serigraphy Printer for Curve and Flat Surfaces is 602.5mm long, 450mm wide and 510mm high its size and weight afford for ease of carriage. The adjustable metallic frame which holds the frame can be adjusted to suit any screen size; ranging from (500mm by 350mm) to (300mm by 22.86m). The main findings of the study were that the objective of developing a serigraphy machine from locally sourced material, that prints on both curve and flat surfaces was realised, also it was discovered that the printing did not leave room for rough prints. The study concluded that by recommending that the “Serigraphy Printer for Curve and Flat Surfaces” is adopted by the local printers to enhance their occupation, and schools to aid teaching.

Entrepreneurship Studies Education in Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria: Theories and Practices (Published)

The paper examined the extent to which entrepreneurship studies education had been effectively taught and learnt in tertiary institutions in Nigeria.  It outlined the core objectives of entrepreneurship Studies education. Entrepreneurship studies education has a lot of challenges such as lack of policy implementation and inadequate funding among others.  Requirements for its effective implementation are also outlined. The paper recommends that there be provision for adequate infrastructural materials, teachers and learners awareness and adequate provision of materials if the objectives of the course must actualized. The paper concluded that entrepreneurship studies education contributes significantly towards the growth and development of any given society

Development and Evaluation of Instructional Video for Teaching and Learning Woodwork Technology Psychomotor Skills in Nigerian Universities: Implication for the Production of Competent Graduates (Published)

Woodwork is one of the areas of Technical Education programme at the University level in Nigeria. The objectives of this programme have not been achieved due to the inadequate nature of materials and human resources for implementing its curriculum. In order to address the issue of Technical Education graduates not possessing employable skills, an intervening measure is to develop and evaluate instructional video for teaching and learning Woodwork Technology. The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate Woodwork Technology instructional video. Five (5) research questions guided the study. The population of this study comprised of twenty two (22) heads of units of Building/Woodwork Construction Technology in all the twenty two (22) Universities in Nigeria whose Technical Education programme were accredited as at 2012. The purposive sampling technique was used to select 10 Heads of Units of Building/Woodwork Construction Technology. Primary data were collected using camera and its accessories, and the modified Province of Prince Edwards Island Department of Education DVD/ Video Evaluation form. The data collected was analyzed using frequency count and mean. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that the developed instructional video for teaching and learning practical skills in Woodwork Technology at the University level is suitable in terms of its content, instructional design, technical design, and social consideration.

The Importance of Vocational and Technical Education in Nigeria’s Development (Published)

There can be no sustainable national development without vocational and technical education, and there can be no vocational and technical education without skills acquisition. The issue of sustainable national development is not a one-day event, but constant or continuous process that affects the citizens positively. The paper x-rayed the peculiar characteristics of vocational and technical education in providing necessary skills to the populace for sustainable national development. The conceptual clarification of vocational education, technical education, vocational and technical education, and sustainable national development were considered. The paper further discussed a brief history of vocational and technical education in Nigeria, during the pre-colonial, colonial and the post-colonial era. The paper examines the importance of vocational and technical education in Nigeria development. It further highlighted the role of vocational and technical education in sustainable national development. The paper concluded that non-acquisition of saleable skills has been a major factor in the countries under development and high rates of poverty and other social vices. Therefore, VTE as the type of education with these values should be recognized and taken serious for sustainable national development to strive.

Development of Dress Patterns for Women with Figure Flaws in Anambra State (Published)

The aim of this study was to produce dress patterns for women with figure flaws in Anambra State. A sample of ninety teaching and non-teaching female staff with obvious figure flaws falling into 3-size categories was purposively selected for the study. The study involved taking body measurements, drafting, adapting, altering, cutting out and assembling the garment pieces. After which garments were modeled by the models. Judges and the models assessed the clothing fit and wearing comfort. The obtained data from the assessment instruments were analyzed using mean. Findings from the study showed that the widest distribution of values indicative of figure flaws were found in the bust, waist, and hips. The widest alterations to the drafted patterns related to the hips, waist and bust. The average rating of the clothing fit and comfort by the judges and models were satisfactory respectively. The block patterns developed are recommended for professional tailors and fashion designers.

Prospects, Issues and Challenges of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) In Revamping Nigeria Depressed Economy (Published)

Nigeria aspires to become a major player in the world economy in line with her Vision 20-2020. To achieve this ambitious goal, the most crucial vehicle apart from power and infrastructure, is a skilled and competent workforce. This is necessary for the effective implementation of national development projects and for attracting necessary international investment by hi-tech industries. (NBTE, 2011).  Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is used as a comprehensive term referring to those aspects of the educational process involving, in addition to general education, the study of technologies and related sciences, the acquisition of practical skills, attitudes, understanding and knowledge relating to occupations in various sectors of economic and social life (UNESCO and ILO 2001) In addition to technical knowledge and aptitude, TVET is also concerned with softer skills like communication, negotiation and teamwork. It is dispensed in public and private educational establishments or other forms of formal or informal instructor aimed at granting all segments of the society access to lifelong resources.

Impact of Vocational and Technical Education on Livelihood Sustenance and Economic Development in Nigeria: The Art Workshop Experience (Published)

The focus of this study is basically on the impact that vocational and technical education has on livelihood sustenance and Economic development in Nigeria, using the art workshop training centres as a case study most especially the one established by the Nigerian foremost printmaker: Bruce Onobrakpeya in his home town at Agbarha-Otor, in Delta State of Nigeria. The vocational and technical education opportunities were divided into three broad categories the first is the training offered in private institutions under the entrepreneurship programmes, the second is the training established by governments through formal tertiary institutions such as: the Polytechnics and Colleges of Education and the third is the training sponsored by non-governmental organizations (NGOs), private individuals and/or religious organizations-the art workshop experiments organized in Nigeria at Oye-Ekiti, Osogbo, Ile-Ife, Lagos and Agbarah-Otor fall under the last category. It has been observed that the non-payment approach adopted by the organizers under the third category has been making vocational training programmes more effective, efficient, competitive, flexible and responsive in any community where they are being organized. The conclusion is that the organizers of vocational/art-workshop centres in Nigeria have been focusing on how to satisfy the basic physiological needs of the participants while training, mentoring and motivating them for self development and self fulfilment.

Development of a Computer-Aided Instruction for Effective Teaching of Electrical and Electronic Devices at Nigeria Certificate in Education Technical Level in North Eastern Nigeria (Published)

The purpose of this study was to develop a Computer-Aided instruction (CAI) for teaching Electrical and Electronic Devices at N.C.E. level in North Eastern Nigeria. A flowchart for the CAI was developed by describing the steps in words and representing them by symbols. Connections between events were represented by lines with arrowheads to show the direction or order in which they occur. The CAI was developed and written in visual Basic.Net (VB, NET) targeting the .Net framework 3.5. The user interface was developed using Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). Procedural programming was used and the CAI was tested by using it to teach an experimental group (S1), while control group (S2) was taught using lecture method. The results obtained from the two groups were then compared. Two research questions and one null hypothesis guided the study. A population of 268 students was used. A total of 80 students formed the sample for the study. A purposive sampling technique was used. A researcher-made achievement test (RMAT) was used as instrument for data collection. The instrument was validated by five experts and pilot tested outside the study area in order to establish its reliability. Reliability coefficient of 0.92 was obtained for the RMAT. The mean was used to answer research question two. Z-test was employed to test the null hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. Statistical package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17 was used for the data analysis. Results of the study revealed that there was variation between the mean scores of students taught Electrical and Electronic Devices at N.C.E. II level using CAI and students taught using lecture method. The null hypothesis was rejected, indicating that there was a significant difference between the mean achievement of students taught Electrical and Electronic Devices at N.C.E. II level using CAI and students taught Electrical and Electronic Devices at N.C.E. II level using lecture method. Students taught using CAI performed better than the students taught using lecture method. The CAI was found to be effective in teaching Electrical and Electronic Devices at N.C.E. II level. It was recommended that lecturers of electrical and electronics technology at N.C.E. level be encouraged to use CAI in teaching N.C.E. II Electrical and Electronic Devices.
