Awareness and Attitude towards Acceptance of Vasectomy among Spouses of Pregnant/Delivered Women in the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State (Published)

Awareness and Attitude of vasectomy are critical for enhancing male involvement in family planning and reducing the contraceptive burden on women in Nigeria. This study assessed awareness and attitudes toward vasectomy and how these factors influence its acceptance among spouses of pregnant or recently delivered women at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Nigeria. The study specifically examined the level of awareness of vasectomy, attitudes toward vasectomy as a male contraceptive method, perceived barriers influencing its acceptance, and the readiness of men to consider vasectomy as a family planning option. A descriptive cross-sectional research design was adopted. The study population comprised male spouses of pregnant or recently delivered women attending antenatal, postnatal, and family planning clinics at UCH. Using convenience sampling, fifty respondents who met the eligibility criteria were recruited. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire that assessed respondents’ awareness, attitudes, perceived barriers, and readiness regarding vasectomy. The instrument was validated through expert review and tested for reliability using a pilot study, which produced a reliability coefficient of 0.84. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square analysis at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that most respondents were aware of vasectomy as a permanent family planning method, although misconceptions regarding sexual performance and safety persisted. Respondents generally supported male involvement in reproductive health and joint decision-making with partners. However, cultural beliefs, perceived social stigma, and limited accessibility of services were identified as major barriers to acceptance. Readiness to recommend or adopt vasectomy remained relatively low, though many respondents indicated willingness to consider it after receiving adequate information. The study concludes that improving awareness through targeted health education, promoting male involvement in family planning, and enhancing access to vasectomy services may significantly improve acceptance of the procedure.

Effect of a Nurse-Led Intervention on the knowledge of and attitude towards Chlorhexidine Gel for Cord Treatment on Babies in selected hospitals in Lagos State (Published)

Newborn survival is strongly linked to care quality, with proper umbilical cord care crucial in preventing infections during the first week of life, thereby improving neonatal health outcomes. The main objective was to assess the effect nurse-led intervention on the knowledge of and attitude towards chlorhexidine gel for cord treatment on babies. The study adopted a two group quasi-experimental method. The target population for the study were all the pregnant women in their last trimester attending antenatal clinic in the selected secondary health facilities in Lagos Island while the total sample size was 120 pregnant women in their last trimester selected using purposive and proportional sampling technique. The research instrument used was a questionnaire divided into three sections. The study was carried out in three phases and data collected were analysed using SPSS version 28. The results revealed that in the experimental group, knowledge of chlorhexidine gel use improved significantly from a pre-intervention mean score of 5.14 to 12.69, with 93.7% attaining high knowledge, unlike the control group. Attitudes also shifted in the experimental group from negative to positive, with mean scores rising from 20.14 to 32.69, while the control group showed minimal change. Post-intervention analyses confirmed significant group differences (knowledge: t = 33.858, p < .05; attitude: t = 49.858, p < .05). The study concluded that nurse-led interventions significantly improved mothers’ knowledge and attitudes towards chlorhexidine gel for cord care. It recommends regular health education during antenatal and postnatal care, alongside standardised protocols on umbilical cord care.

Descriptive design was adopted for this study with a sample size of 124 health workers from urban and rural areas, selected across 3 Local Government Areas in the State, using multi-stage sampling techniques. Data collected using Pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire. Data was processed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 27. Results revealed that, majority of the respondents were within age group, 20-29 years (30.7%) and 50 years & above (37.1%) respectively. Also over a third (37.1%) had completed diploma, with about 10 years’ experience or over. Overall 44.5% of the total respondents have adequate knowledge of IPC. Also over half (54.4%) had more negative attitude towards IPC, while slightly over half (51.9%) of the respondents had more poor adherence to IPC. Hypotheses tested revealed that, there is a significant difference in the knowledge (t (123) =4.116; p=.000), attitude (t (123) =5.289; p=.000) and adherence (t(123)=4.481; p=.000) to  IPC among healthcare workers in rural and Urban PHCs in Osun State. The study concluded that, there is knowledge deficit on IPC practices, while adherence and attitude towards IPC practice among majority health workers in both rural and urban PHCs violates the standard expectation from Healthcare professionals.
