Democratic Transition/Succession Politics and the Challenges to Peace and Stability in Africa

Transition/succession politics and its accompanied crisis is one of the main features of African Governments and politics. Often, succession politics generates stiff opposition by contending factions and forces. This paper seeks to analyze the trends and dynamics of the politics of transition and succession in Africa. The paper has identified the patterns of transitions in Africa and has attributed these transitions as the contradictions arising from African political system that accommodates politics of exclusion where succession to power are ill motivated and grand design by those in power either to elongate themselves in power or to maintain hegemonic hold on state resources. This intrigue the paper has asserted ignites crises and creates political instability and factional conflicts. The paper has made some recommendations and provided a summary and conclusion.
