Early Graders’ Learning in Mother Tongue: Parents and Teachers’ Perspectives (Published)

Comprehending the learning process in bilingual situations mostly depends on how the general public perceives the status of local and national languages. As such, considering the Ghanaian language policy which requires that both the English language and learner’s mother tongue (MT) be taught as subjects in the classroom and employed as medium of teaching at various levels of the educational ladder, this study explored the perceptions of parents and teachers on the use of MT medium of instruction (MOI) in early childhood education (ECE). Using pragmatist paradigm, the mixed method approach and concurrent embedded design were employed. Questionnaire and semi-structured interview guide were used to seek data from 492 respondents in multilingual Ho in the Ho municipality of Volta Region of Ghana. Data was analysed using means and standard deviation, and themes.  Findings revealed that notwithstanding their acknowledgement of MT in ECE, both keyholders disapproved MT MOI and commended the use of English or a blend of English and MT as MOI in Primary 1-3. The study therefore recommends that cultural and linguistic diversities of pupils should be considered in determining the language of instruction and communication in ECE. Broader and more engaging conversation is also recommended to inform more inclusive and effective language policy in ECE.

An investigation of Saudi EFL teachers’ perceptions of learning-oriented language assessment (Published)

Learning-oriented assessment (LOA) is a highly collaborative and interactive approach that is believed to promote students’ language learning. Nevertheless, little is known about Saudi EFL teachers’ knowledge, practices, and challenges of implementing LOA in their language classrooms. To this end, this study explored Saudi EFL teachers’ knowledge, practices, and challenges of implementing LOA using a quantitative method survey. The Teachers’ Learning-Oriented Assessment Questionnaire (TLOAQ) was developed and distributed to 162 Saudi EFL school teachers. The findings indicated that Saudi EFL teachers had a moderate level of knowledge regarding LOA. Besides, they did not implement and practice the principles of LOA efficiently. In addition, EFL teachers reported significant personal, contextual and organizational challenges that limit the implementation of LOA, such as time constraints, large classes, insufficient training, and exam-oriented culture. Besides, the MANOVA results indicated no significant differences in EFL teachers’ knowledge and practices of LOA due to gender and years of experience. The findings highlight the need to develop teachers’ assessment literacy as well as resolve the difficulties that limit the implementation of LOA to enhance language assessment effectiveness. Future qualitative research should be

Problematic Co-Existence of English Language and Nigerian Pidgin (Published)

The English language is the language of formal education in Nigeria. For some time now, students’ performance in the language at public examinations has been very unsatisfactory to the stakeholders in education. A linguistic problem is one crucial contributing factor. The research methodology combines two data gathering instruments: the questionnaire and examination of respondents’ written essay. The paper discovers that Nigerian pidgin is a linguistic force to reckon with as its co-existence with the all important English language requires a clinical attention by all: especially; the government, curriculum developers and teachers. Those who formulate policy on education would need to plan for the Nigerian pidgin, not only in order to arrest the ever sliding performance of students in English language, but also to improve it.

A SURVEY OF THE AVAILABILITY AND UTILIZATION OF CURRENT INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES IN THE TRAINING OF TEACHERS OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN KENYA’S UNIVERSITIES (Published)

This study was a survey of the availability and the use of educational technologies in the training of teachers of English in Moi University. The objectives of this study were to: identify the availability of the needed educational technologies, factors leading to ineffective use, the extent to which they are acquired and used in the training of teachers of English. This study was based on two theories namely: Technology Acceptance Model (The User Acceptance of Information Technology) and the Behaviourist theory based on the Audio- Visual Method.  Technology acceptance model holds the principles that acceptance of technology is based on its relative advantage, compatibility, ease of use, triability and observability.  The Behaviourists theory is based on the Audio- visual method which considers learning as a reinforced behaviour.  It advocated that the more the common sense used to perceive information the better the retention of information.A descriptive survey research design was adopted.  This was utilized to collect detailed descriptions of existing modern educational technologies with intent of employing data to justify current conditions and practices. The study population included fourth year student teacher trainees of English education, four lecturers of English and Literature education, Head of the department of curriculum instruction and educational media and the senior media technician.Non probability sampling mainly purposive was used to sample all the respondents.  Questionnaires and interviews were used to collect data.  The results were analyzed using Descriptive statistics, which involved the use of frequencies and percentages. The findings of this study were: the University had few modern and old educational technologies required for the training of teachers of English, that effective training was limited by shortage of training materials, shortage of time, shortage of funds, limited  motivation, inadequate space, lack of collaboration between  the University and K. I. E in the recommendation of teaching resources, few number of lecturers compared to large number of students and finally the University was slow in implementing the policies in the strategic plan for the year 2005 to 2015.
