Influence of Gender on the Adversity Quotient (AQ) of Inmates in Delta State, Nigeria (Published)

This study is to determine the influence of gender on the Adversity Quotient of inmates in Delta State. One research question and corresponding hypothesis guided the study. The design of the study was a descriptive research design. A sample of 525 inmates was drawn from a population of 7,348 inmates in all the custodian centres in Delta State. The researchers adopted purposive and non-proportionate stratified simple random sampling techniques for the sample size determination. The instrument for the study was titled Adversity Quotient Scale for Prisoners (AQSP). The AQSP is made up of 96 items delineating inmates feeling adversity. Almost half of the items of the AQSP were positively keyed while the othesr half was negatively keyed. The face and content validities of the instrument were established. The reliability of the instrument was ascertained using internal consistency reliability via Cronbach Alpha technique. A coefficient of 0.95 was obtained. Data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation, independent sample t–test technique. The results showed that there was a significant difference between the male and female inmates on their Adversity Quotient. This implies that there is nothing to worry about when comparing the adversity level of male and female inmates. The study therefore recommended among others that prison warders should encourage the inmates by giving assignments on biographies of people within and outside the immediate environment of inmates who have distinguished themselves through dint of discipline, hard-work and sheer bravery.

Effect of Gender on Primary Five (5) Pupil’s Achievement In Basic Science Using Computer-Assisted Instruction in Ibadan Oyo State, Nigeria (Published)

The use of instructional materials may not be limited to a particular field of study. Effective teaching and learning of basic science at primary school level may depend to a large extent on adequate use of instructional materials. This is because children at this age level tend to learn better when taught with real objects that they can see and touch. However, available evidence indicates that, despite previous efforts and methods used in teaching, performance in basic science is still very low Hence; this study investigated the effect of computer assisted instruction (CAI) and gender as they predict primary five (5) pupil’s achievement in basic science. Pretest-posttest, control group quasi-experimental design study involving a 2 x 2 factorial matrix was adopted. Purposive sampling technique was use to select 40 primary five (5) pupils’ in two private schools in Ibadan north LGA, of Oyo state. Valid and reliable instrument of twenty-five 25 items on basic science test (p= 0.83) were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using Analysis for Covariance (ANCOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. While Sidak post hoc test was used to explain the direction of significance between the groups. There is a significant difference in the performance of experimental and control group after treatment on primary school pupil’s achievement in Basic science (F(1,39) =11.015 ; p< 0.5), there is no significant main effect of gender on basic science of participants ((F (1, 39) = .462; p< 0.5). Findings revealed that majority of boys achieve more in basic science when they use computers than the girls in school.

LEVEL OF CLASS, GENDER TYPE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL AND NIGERIA ADOLESCENTS SEXUAL BEHAVIOR (Published)

The study examined secondary school adolescent’s sexual behavior in Gboko, Benue State Nigeria. A total of 488 Nigeria adolescents took part in the study. A cross-sectional survey design was used. The safe sex behavior scale was used for data collection. Three hypotheses were tested at alpha level of 0.05 using independent t-test. The first hypothesis established a significant difference between junior and senior secondary school adolescents on sexual behavior (t(df=486) = 2.88; p<.05), and there was a significant difference between male and female secondary school adolescents on sexual behavior (t(df=478) = 1.65; p<.05). Also significant difference was found between Nigerian day and boarding students on sexual behavior (t(df=486) = 1.56; p<.05) Based on the findings, level of class of secondary school, Gender and type of school in Nigeria play important role in Adolescent sexual behavior and therefore it was recommended that proper guidance counseling and sex education should be given to adolescents on sexual behavior.
