Diminishing African Traditional Systems of Communication: Perception of a Lis Professional (Published)

This article discusses the usefulness of African traditional systems of communication and the need for archivists to preserve them for posterity. It offers a review of relevant literature and a wider discussion on African traditional systems of communication noting their importance, taxonomy, gradual distinct and the role of archivists in preserving these systems. The chapter underscores the importance of African traditional systems of communication, the challenges Africans are faced with to sustain them amidst the influence of Western media of communication in contemporary society and the need for archivists to collect and preserve these systems.

Administration and Library Services in Tertiary Institution in Cross River and Akwa-Ibom States (Published)

This study was conducted to examine the extent to which administration affects the provision of library services in Cross River and Akwa Ibom States. The simple random sampling technique was used in selecting the number of staff or respondents. The selection was done by independent person without replacement until the required respondents were obtained in each group. The population of this study consisted of all library officers in four tertiary institution’s libraries in Cross River and Akwa Ibom States. The total number of library officers in these libraries was 450. The four tertiary institutions selected for the study and the number of officers in each, were University of Calabar, 170, University of Uyo, 145, College of Education, Akamkpa 65 and College of Education, Afaha Nsit 70 respectively. A four-point Likert scale questionnaire was designed to assess staff responses of the five variables namely, planning, organizing, staffing, coordinating and communication were developed, validated and administered. A total of five hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance using Chi-square approach. The findings of the research revealed that, the influence of administration on the provision of quality library services in tertiary institutions in Cross River and Akwa Ibom States is relatively positive.

A Survey of Librarians’ Information Technology Literacy Level in Nigerian Academic Libraries (Published)

This article investigated the Information Technology (IT) literacy level of librarians in four tertiary institutions in Ondo State, Nigeria. Questionnaire was used to collect data. Out of the thirty administered, twenty-four were returned and found useful. The response rate, therefore, was 80%. The study found that, generally, the literacy level was still low even though there was greater awareness. Thus, 29% of the librarians had never undergone formal training on computer. 79% did not have personal computer and only one librarian (4%) could design a database and create a website. Finally many of the sections in the libraries are without computer. It was recommended therefore, that librarians must utilize optimally every opportunity to develop their IT proficiency.
