Awareness and Utilization of Social Media Services for Library Information Sourcing Among Undergraduates in Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo, Nigeria (Published)

The study is on Awareness and utilization of social media service for library information sourcing among Undergraduates in Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo, Nigeria.This study adopted a descriptive survey design. The population comprised all undergraduate students registered at Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED), Ondo. A sample of 100 undergraduate students was drawn using a stratified random sampling technique, stratified by department and level of study. Data were collected using the Awareness and Utilization of Social Media Library Information Sourcing and Delivery Questionnaire (AUSLISDQ), a researcher-designed instrument validated by library science experts. The instrument consisted of four sections aligned with the research questions and scored on a four-point Likert scale: Strongly Agree (SA) = 4, Agree (A) = 3, Disagree (D) = 2, Strongly Disagree (SD) = 1; and for frequency items: Daily = 4, Weekly = 3, Monthly = 2, Never = 1. A mean score of 2.50 and above was adopted as the decision rule for a positive/affirmed response. Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) were used to answer the research questions, while inferential statistics, independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMC), and Chi-square, were employed to test the four null hypotheses at the 0.05 level of significance. All data were analysed using SPSS version 26. Only five of the nineteen platforms assessed exceeded the 2.50 frequency threshold: WhatsApp recorded the highest mean by a considerable margin (x̄ = 3.33, SD = 0.88), confirming its dominance as the preferred social media tool for academic information sharing. Facebook ranked second (x̄ = 2.92, SD = 1.06), followed by Wiki (x̄ = 2.81, SD = 1.08), Instagram (x̄ = 2.54, SD = 1.06), and YouTube (x̄ = 2.58, SD = 1.01). All remaining platforms, including LinkedIn (x̄ = 2.40), Twitter/X (x̄ = 2.44), Zoom (x̄ = 1.96), Blogs (x̄ = 1.85), Skype (x̄ = 1.85), TeacherTube (x̄ = 1.68), The strong and consistent affirmation of social media use across all eight academic work categories, with research (x̄ = 3.17) and lecture preparation (x̄ = 3.14) as the leading academic drivers. The breadth of academic purposes for which social media is used suggests that students have organically integrated social media into their academic information ecosystems, a development that provides an opening for libraries to institutionalise and formalise this behaviour through structured social media information services

Awareness, Attitude and Exploration of Library Services among Undergraduates in Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo, Nigeria (Published)

The research is on Awareness, Attitude and Exploration of Library Services among Undergraduates in Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo, Nigeria. The population comprises all undergraduate students in Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo. Simple Random sampling technique was used for the study. The sample size of the study was seventy (100) degree students. The research design for the study is descriptive survey research design. The finding revealed that students expressed high satisfaction with most of the library services provided, specifically, services such as the library education programme, the borrowing period for library books, duration of opening hours, number of books borrowed at a time among others were well satisfied with. The research concludes that this is a practical evidence that Adeyemi Federal University Library is doing a good job, however, other services rated low should be strengthened and built up. It is recommended that undergraduates in the university should continue to explore the services of the library and the library staff should also be more proactive in rendering a 21st library services to them.

The Extent of Awareness and Adoption of UNESCO Conservation Guidelines Restoration Practices by the University Library Staff in South –East Nigeria (Published)

This study is to find out the extent of awareness and adoption of UNESCO Conservation Guidelines restoration practices by the university library staff in south east Nigeria. The instrument for data collection was questionnaire.  The statistical tests used in the data analysis included the summated score and t-test. The research questions were analyzed using the Summated score while the hypotheses were tested using the t-test. The result shows that university library staff extent of awareness of UNESCO restoration practices is accepted as being above average for only three (3) out of the twenty-two (22) items considered under UNESCO restoration practices. The accepted items are those with mean scores greater than the expected value of 3.00 on a 5-point Likert scale. We therefore conclude that there is a significant difference between university library staff extent of awareness and extent of adoption of UNESCO restoration practices. Furthermore, the result also indicates that the overall extent of awareness of UNESCO restoration practices by university library staff is 1.94 with a standard deviation of 0.27 on a 5-point Likert scale. The computed t-value is −64.540 with an associated significance probability of 1.0000, which is greater than 0.05. Thus, the test is not significance at 5% level of significance, since P>0.05. We therefore conclude that the extent of awareness of restoration practices in the UNESCO Conservation Guidelines by university library staff in South-East Nigeria is below average. The result also shows that the university library staff extent of adoption of UNESCO restoration practices is accepted as being above average for only three (3) out of the twenty-two (22) items considered under UNESCO restoration practices. The accepted items are those with mean scores greater than the expected value of 3.00 on a 5-point Likert scale. Furthermore, the reslt also indicates that the overall extent of adoption of UNESCO restoration practices by university library staff is 1.57 with a standard deviation of 0.15 on a 5-point Likert scale. The computed t-value is −155.561 with an associated significance probability of 1.0000, which is greater than 0.05. Thus, the test is not significance at 5% level of significance, since P>0.05. We therefore conclude that the extent of adoption of restoration practices in the UNESCO Conservation Guidelines by university library staff in South-East Nigeria is below average. Based on the findings, we recommends that: Government should sponsor Library staff to workshops, seminars and conferences nationally and internationally on the UNESCO Conservation Guidelines for acquisition of better Knowledge needed in using the UNESCO Conservation Guidelines.The university should provide an enabling environment to help the university library staff work effectively and use the UNESCO Conservation Guidelines in their restoration practices. The University Library staff should visit other Institutions of higher learning that uses UNESCO Conservation Guidelines for better knowledge, improvement and greater productivity.

The Level of Awareness, Knowledge and Infringement on Copyright at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria (Published)

The encouragement of intellectual creation is one of the basic prerequisites for social, economic and cultural development of any nation. Copyright was instituted to inspire authors towards more creativity by enabling them to harness the full benefit of their works; however there are issues associated with the compliance on copyright rules. There is a dare need to stem the overwhelming tide of copyright infringement activities going on across the globe. This study examines the level of awareness, knowledge and infringement on copyright at the University of Ibadan. Questionnaire instrument was used for data collection. The population used in the study comprises 150 academic and senior staff of University of Ibadan, Nigeria. The study found that there is low level of awareness and knowledge on copyright matters, as many of the respondents were unfamiliar with matters relating to copyright. The study identified a high level of infringement on copyright in University of Ibadan. The study further advocated for intensive sensitization on copyright matters and enforcement of copyright law within University of Ibadan community in order to strengthen copyright protection.

Awareness and Experience of School Library Usage among Undergraduate Students: A Review of the Literature (Published)

Tertiary institutions have academic libraries attached to them with the mandate to preserve and provide access to knowledge and information and support the mission of their parent institutions but before getting introduced to the academic library, users must have passed through a primary and secondary school expected to have a school library. The mission and goal of a typical school library is to ensure that students and staff are able to use ideas and information of the school library media center and have equitable access to books, reading space, information, and information technology. This is expected to help prepare students to live and learn in a world of information and their perception of the school library, its image, services and importance, which goes a long way in making them lifelong learners and potential users of other library types. Ironically, one still finds in Nigeria, some primary and secondary schools being run without libraries. This paper therefore discussed the extent of school library awareness and experience and its possible effects on the library usage by undergraduate students. Specifically, it discussed school library awareness and experience as well as library usage among the undergraduate students; and concluded on the extent to which school library awareness and experience are determinants of library usage among undergraduate students

Awareness and Use of Institutional Repository for Academic Staff output in Tertiary Institutions (Published)

The paper is on Awareness and Use of Institutional Repository for Academic Staff output in Tertiary Institutions.  The use of IRs by academic staff is beneficial to the individual lecturer, library, host institution and society at large. The benefits of IR to individual lecturers include increased dissemination and impact of scholarship, enhanced professional visibility due to broader dissemination and increased use of publications. Others are: storage and access to a wide range of materials, greater security and long-term preservation of materials and the building of a central archive of a researcher’s work. Institutional repositories have been established in academic and research libraries. University based institutional repositories manage, disseminate, and preserve where appropriate, digital materials created by the institution and its community members. The paper discussed awareness, use and benefit of IRs, academic staff attitude towards intellectual work deposit in IRs and challenges of IRs in our academic community. Based on the literature in area of the problems that face academic libraries in Nigeria, the researchers made some recommendations

Awareness and Utilization of Databases Subscribed to by FUTO Library among FUTO Academic Staff (Published)

This paper is an attempt to study the issues of database Awareness and utilization by Academic Staff members in Federal University of Technology, Owerri with a view to study the exposure of Academics staff to the University’s subscribed database resources. It also aims to bring to light the challenges that confront the users and recommend some remedial measures for its improvement. A test-retest reliability method of two weeks interval was conducted, response obtained were subjected to Pearson Product Moment Correlation method and a reliability co-efficient of 0.78 was obtained. The Random Sampling Technique together with a Questionnaire was used for data collection on 100 out of a population size of 1,003 academic staff members and only 74 responded giving a response rate of 74 percent.Descriptive and inferential Statistics including Frequencies count, charts, mean score, Relative Important index (R.I.I) and Percentages were used in reporting the findings. The study confirmed that the level of awareness of the subscribed electronic information resources or databases by the Library Management is rather low as well as that of the level of utilization. The paper records that the reasons why academic staff members of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri use databases; were mainly for research (48%) and current awareness (49%). It suggests further for an improvement in the training of the academic staff members , efficient power supply, and access to facilities with high Internet speed and subscription to more databases (e-resources) by the University Library.
