fathers of African missions

Les débuts de la mission catholique en Côte d’Ivoire : de l’appel des pères de la Société des missions africaines à l’action du prophète Harris (1895-1915) (Published)

The article presents the beginnings of the Catholic Church in Côte d’Ivoire, including the first three decades of the pioneering mission, the SMA. He highlights the many difficulties of establishment encountered by this mission until 1913, when with the appearance of the Prophet Harris, several barriers initially erected against the gospel were lifted, thus promoting mass conversions to Catholicism. The objective pursued is to assess the impact of the Prophet Harris’s crusade (1913-1915) on the rise of nascent Catholicism in the Ivory Coast. Its production is based on a cross-analysis of archival sources and various information from books on the religious question in Côte d’Ivoire.
