Capacity Building and Employee Productivity in the Nigeria Public Sector: A Study of Anambra State Civil Service Commission, Awka (Published)

The level of low productivity among workers especially in the public sector has left much to be desired training and development of employees have been championed as a remedy to this malaise. However, the paper examines the extent to which capacity building enhances the quality of service delivery in the Anambra State civil service commission, Awka and to identify the factors that have been militating against capacity building of employees in the Anambra State civil service commission, Awka. The survey design was adopted to guide the investigation. The population of the study is 280. The theoretical framework adopted was Organizational Development theory that was propounded by Kurt Lewin in 1950. The researcher used chi-square for testing the hypotheses. Moreover, the major findings of the study were that capacity building enhances the quality of service delivery in the Anambra State civil service commission, Awka and that lack of training, insufficient fund and lack of modern technologies are the major factors militating against capacity building of employees in the Anambra State civil service commission, Awka. The major recommendation was that government should make policy that will encourage continuous staff training and development of its workers so that the potentials of the employees would be adequately harnessed.

Involvement and Employee Performance in Public Universities in Uganda (Published)

The study sought to establish the effect of involvement on employee performance in public universities in Uganda.  Performance in the study was measured in terms of efficiency, effectiveness, quality and productivity. The target population in focus included: top University administrators teaching and non-teaching staff members, making a total of 2236. This study adopted a descriptive cross-sectional survey research design using both quantitative and qualitative research methods to address the research questions and objectives.. The study used three sampling techniques, that is, purposive, stratified sampling and simple random sampling. The data collection instruments included interview and questionnaires; the method of data analysis and presentation was descriptive and inferential. Findings revealed that involvement contributes to variation in Employees’ performance in public Universities. It is expected that the study will benefit academicians, and managers of institutions of higher learning in Uganda and beyond. It is recommended that universities are better adapting the culture of involvement of employment to enhance employee output and overall growth and sustainable development of Universities to ably compete locally and globally.

CONFIGURATION OF NIGERIAN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS EMPLOYEE USING MISSION STATEMENTS: A DISCOURSE (Published)

Organization Mission Statement is a critical roadmap or compass of an Institution. It is useful for practical day-to-day running of Institutions operation. However, significant percentage of Nigerian Tertiary Institutions employees is not adequately informed about the philosophy and objective of the institution which has affected their performance in the system. This qualitative study discusses the configuration of Nigerian tertiary institutions employee by using awareness, motivation and organizational commitment to spur Nigerian tertiary institutions for greater performance. Eclectic theory of social identity was adopted to position the study a distinct study. Results obtained revealed that there is presence of mission statement in Nigeria tertiary institutions; displayed on website, strategic places in the institutions. But significant percentage of the employees is not aware of their institutions mission statement despite the potentials it has to offer. The study concluded, given the mission statements are vital for dynamic management tool and advanced performance; it is outstanding that Nigerian tertiary institutions management should articulate mission statement, based on the environmental exigencies and where necessary make it collective responsibility among the employee in the institution.
