The Effect of Collaborative Learning Strategy on Office Technology and Management Students’ Academic Achievement and Interest in Office Management (Published)

The study was conducted to ascertain the effect of collaborative learning strategy on office technology and management students’ academic achievement and interest in office management.  Two specific purposes, research questions and null hypotheses were carefully developed to guide the study.  In carrying out this study, a quasi experimental design was adopted which involved both treatment and control groups to be used intact since no randomization was needed.  The population of the study comprised of NCE III students.  Two colleges of education were selected through a purposive sampling technique.  One group comprising of 34 students of both male and female was assigned to the treatment group and the other group made up of 26 students was assigned to the control group.  An instructional package was developed for each of the groups.  Package for the treatment group was the collaborative learning strategy while the package for the control group was individualized learning method.  Data were collected with the aid of two instruments namely: Office Management Achievement Test (OMAT) and the Office Management Interest Inventory (OMII).  Both instruments were validated and necessary adjustments made.  The internal consistency testing of OMAT using K-R20 yielded a reliability index of 0.94.  Also, Cronbach alpha of 0.94 was obtained from the reliability testing of OMII.  Data for the two research questions that guided the study were answered using mean and standard deviation.  On the other hand, the two hypotheses that guided the study were tested using ANCOVA.  The results revealed that collaborative learning strategy has a strong positive effect on Office Technology and Management Students’ Academic Achievement and Interest in Office Management.  Collaborative learning strategy, in this study, is better than the individualized learning method in enhancing both male and female students’ academic achievement and interest.  Therefore, the study recommended among others that curriculum planners should integrate the collaborative learning strategy into the office management curriculum because of its effectiveness in enhancing students’ academic achievement and interest in the course.  College management should train and retrain office management lecturers on ways of adopting and effectively using collaborative learning strategy in learning.

Effect of Flipped Learning on Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) Mathematics Students’ Interest and Achievement in Trigonometry in Kano State, Nigeria (Published)

This study sought to determine the effects of flipped learning strategy on NCE Mathematics students’ interest and achievement in trigonometry. The study employed a quasi-experimental 2 x 2 factorial research design. The sample of the study consisted of 60 students, who had a personal computer and Internet access at home. They were randomly assigned into an experimental group of 32 students (22 males, 10 female) and control group of 28 students (20 male, 8 female) The instruments used for data collection during the pre-test and post-test consisted of a trigonometry achievement test (TAT) and trigonometry interest scale (TIS). The TAT was validated by specialists in mathematics education and measurement and evaluation using table of specifications constructed for the multiple choice test items. The multiple choice test had average difficulty and discrimination indices of 0.43 and 0.55 respectively. The reliabilities of the multiple choice test items and trigonometry interest scale were established using the coefficient of internal consistency based on Cronbach Alpha ( ).The reliability coefficients for the TAT and TIS were 0.68 and 0.75 respectively.  The data collected from the pre-test and post-test were subjected to statistical analysis using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The research questions were answered using descriptive statistics while the hypotheses for the study were tested using t-test statistics and the Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) with pre-test scores as covariates at 0.05 level of significance. The findings from the study showed that: flipped learning l strategy was more effective than the lecture method in improving students’ academic achievement and interest in trigonometry. The result also shows that there was no significant difference between the achievement of male and female students from the experimental group in trigonometry and that there was no significant interaction effects of treatment and gender on students’ achievement in trigonometry. It was recommended among others that Curriculum planners and educational policy makers should consider a review of the curriculum to incorporate flipped classroom strategy into the Nigeria Certificate in Education Mathematics Curriculum

Student Variables and Choice of Christian Religious Knowledge among senior secondary School Students in cross River State, Nigeria (Published)

This study assessed student variables and choice of Christian Religious Knowledge among secondary school students in Cross River State. To achieve this purpose, two research questions were put forward and transformed into two null hypotheses. A review of related literature was carried out to examine what has already been documented on the phenomenon under study. The ex-post facto research design was considered most suitable for achieving the purpose of this study. The simple random sampling technique and proportionate sampling technique were used in selecting the sample used for the study. A structured questionnaire titled student variables and choice of Christian religious knowledge questionnaire (SVCCRKQ) was the instrument used for collection of data in the study. The reliability of the research instrument was established through the Cronbach Alpha reliability method. Chi-square statistical tool was used for data analysis. The findings obtained from analysis of data and hypotheses testing revealed that there is a significant influence of gender and interest on students’ choice of Christian Religious Knowledge in the study area. It was concluded that the gender of students cannot be a barrier when it comes to making choice of subject. Based on these findings it was recommended among others that students with low interest in Christian Religious Knowledge should be encouraged to see the subject as an important tool for developing good behaviour and peaceful co-existence.

A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE ATTITUDE OF STUDENTS TOWARDS SCIENCE AND ART COURSES (Review Completed - Accepted)

This study did a comparative analysis of the attitude of students towards Science and Art courses. Also, a comparison of the attitude of male and female students towards Arts and Science courses was done. The population consisted of all the students of senior secondary schools from the six south-western states of Nigeria. The sample consisted of 1440 students selected using stratified sampling technique. The instrument used was the Science-Oriented Attitudinal Scale (SOAS) adopted from Omirin (1999). The instrument was already validated by the author, with the item validity coefficients ranging between 0.31 and 0.57, and a reliability coefficient of 0.89. Two null hypotheses were generated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The results revealed that there was a significant difference between the attitude of students towards Science and Art courses. The result further showed that the attitude of male and female students towards Science and Art courses are not different. Based on the results of this study, some recommendations were made. It was recommended that teachers should be encouraged to instill positive attitudes in students towards both Science and Art courses. Attitude and interest of students should be used as one of the yardsticks for admission into schools
