The Intruding Tongue: Interference of the First Language in the Second Language Acquisition with Reference to Indian Students

The focus of this study is on depicting, classifying and evaluating instances of grammatical and phonological errors in the second language made by Indian students as a result of negative transfer from the native language. This paper reflects on some common phonological errors that result from the linguistic phenomenon where non-native users of English language tend to carry the intonation, phonological processes and pronunciation rules from the first language to their English speech. It also highlights the instances of contextually erroneous grammar use in the English language caused by the interruption of first language in the acquisition of the target language. This paper aims to emphasize the pattern of grammatical and phonological interferences in L1 and L2, where L1 or native language is Hindi and L2 or target language is English.
