The Effect of EMI on the Academic Achievement of Engineering Students: A Case of A’ Sharqiyah University, Oman (Published)

Globally, there is a growing trend of teaching and learning academic courses in English in higher education (HE). The objective of this study is to examine the impact of English-medium instruction (EMI) on the academic performance of engineering students at A’ Sharqiyah University in Oman. The study employed a purposive sampling technique, together with a case study strategy and a qualitative interpretive approach, to examine the impact of EMI on the academic performance and studies of engineering students. A total of ten engineering students and five engineering instructors were asked to complete an open-ended survey. Furthermore, two classroom observations were conducted to gather data on students’ proficiency in communication within engineering-related disciplines. The data obtained from the open-ended survey and observations were analyzed. The findings demonstrated that EMI exerted both beneficial and detrimental impacts on students’ academic performance. Advice was provided on how to address the difficulties arising from English Medium Instruction (EMI).
