Code-Switching and Gendered Conversational Styles in the American Granddaughter: A Sociolinguistics Analysis

Abstract

This study investigated the functions of code-switching and gendered conversational styles in Inaam Kachachi’s novel The American Granddaughter. It explored how linguistic features reflected cultural identity and shaped social relationships among the characters. A mixed methods approach was adopted to analyze twenty selected excerpts from the novel. The first ten excerpts were analyzed according to Gumperz’s framework to identify the functions of code-switching, while the remaining ten excerpts were examined in light of Tannen’s work on gender difference in conversational styles. The analysis revealed how the characters’ linguistics choices contributed to the expression of cultural identity and the construction of social relationships within the novel.
