Determinants of Choice of Traditional and Modern Family Planning In Rural Communities of Akwa Ibom State

Abstract

The primary objectives of this study were to obtain reliable information on the levels of knowledge and use of traditional and modern family planning and to identify factors affecting the practice of contraception in rural Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Data used for the study were collected from a representative sample size of 900 women. Level of use of traditional family planning was higher than that of modern. Accessibility factors were found to have influenced the choice and use of family planning in the study area. Contraceptive dropouts were mainly users of modern contraceptives. Some recommendations are made in order to make family planning services accessible to majority of women of child bearing age in Nigeria, most especially those in rural areas.
