Contemporary doctoral education requires researchers to produce original knowledge while navigating increasingly complex methodological, interdisciplinary, ethical, technological, and international research environments. Yet doctoral research training is frequently organised around discrete methodological competencies, potentially obscuring the relationships through which research questions, theoretical perspectives, methodological choices, evidence, analysis, ethics, and scholarly contribution acquire coherence. This conceptual paper addresses this gap by developing the Integrated Doctoral Research Design Framework (IDRDF), which reframes doctoral research design as an iterative, reflexive, and interconnected process of knowledge production. By drawing on a critical synthesis of scholarship on doctoral education, research design, methodological coherence, researcher development, supervision, ethics, and knowledge production, the paper conceptualises eight interdependent dimensions through which doctoral inquiry progresses from intellectual curiosity to original scholarly contribution. The framework’s central proposition is that research quality is not simply the cumulative outcome of discrete methodological competencies but an emergent property of the coherence among intellectual problematisation, literature engagement, conceptual framing, research-question development, methodological reasoning, evidence generation and analysis, ethical and reflexive practice, and research management. The paper further demonstrates how this integrative perspective can inform doctoral supervision, curriculum design, research-methods teaching, institutional research training, doctoral progression, and approaches to research quality and international doctoral education. The IDRDF contributes theoretically by positioning integrative research judgement as a distinctive dimension of doctoral capability and by providing a systems-oriented account of how coherent research design supports credible and original knowledge production. The paper concludes by identifying empirical pathways for validating and refining the framework across disciplines and doctoral contexts.
