Residents’ Satisfaction with Infrastructural Facilities Provision in Housing Estate Lafia, Nasarawa State, Nigeria (Published)

The emphasis of this paper is to assess residents’ satisfaction with infrastructural facilities provision in housing estate Lafia, Nasarawa State, Nigeria, with a view to improve a level of satisfaction with infrastructures provided. The study adopts survey design using quantitative approach and data were collected through questionnaire survey from 500 housing unit, data were systematically selected from target population in housing estate Lafia. The data collected was subjected to descriptive with mean ranking. The study observed that the residents’ satisfaction with provision of drainages facilities, provision of electricity facilities, and provision of portable water supply facilities provision of road networks and Sewage and solid waste management facilities ranked first fifth respectively and they were found to be moderately satisfied in there provision. While provision of health facilities and provision of market facilities were provided in low level in the study area with low mean scores ranked at nine to ten respectively. The study recommended that the government should upgrade existing market or improve infrastructure in existing market, including proper sanitation, waste management to ease the situation of market facilities in the study area. The study recommended that the Government should engage local communities in the planning and development of these facilities to ensure they meet their specific needs.

Effect of Basic Amenities Provision and Residents Satisfaction on Willingness to live in Public Housing Estate Lafia, Nasarawa State (Published)

It has been testified that international concerns have been growing over the weakening housing conditions in urban areas of developing nations and the issues of poor housing excellence is therefore a global phenomenon. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of basic amenities provision on willingness to live in public housing estate Lafia, with a view to suggest ways to improve on the level of satisfaction with basic amenities provided in the study area. The study adopted descriptive design and quantitative approach and the study used questionnaire survey from 500 household heads, the study adopted stratified random sampling technique and SPSS software version 22centrs was used for data analysis and the results were presented in tables. The study concludes by demonstrating 13.6% of the willingness to live is influenced by the basic amenities provision and resident’s satisfaction which means that basic amenities provision and residents’ satisfaction have medium effect size on willingness to live in the study and amenity provision and satisfaction have a statistically insignificant effect on the willingness to live with P-value 0.191 and 0.232 > 0.05. The study recommended that the government should increase healthcare centres by building a new clinics or hospitals, or expand existing ones, to bring medical care closer to residents living in 500 housing estate. The study recommended that the government should upgrade or improve infrastructure in existing markets, including proper sanitation, waste management to ease the situation of market facilities in the study area.

Locational Characteristics and Fire Prevention Mechanisms of Petrol Stations in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Nigeria (Published)

Continuous increase in the number of petrol filling stations across major cities in Nigeria is becoming more worrisome. In the past, petrol stations in Nigeria were usually located along major roads where residential developments are sparsely distributed. Sadly, there is proliferation of petrol filling stations within residential areas exposing large number of residents to grievous loss of not just properties, but human lives. The regulatory agencies of government in Nigeria responsible for the approval and administration of petrol stations seem overwhelmed and ineffective. This study examines the locational attributes and distribution of petrol filling stations in Ogbomoso Township using nearest neighbor analysis. The result reveals that petrol filling stations are not evenly distributed, but clustered together thereby poses a serious threat to the members of the public. The study concludes by calling on all the regulatory agencies relevant to the development of petrol filling station to vehemently enforce their laws on the existing petrol stations and government at all levels to review various laws relating to the establishment and operation of petrol filling stations in the country in order to protect lives and properties.

Inhabitants’ Rating of Neighbourhood Quality Indicators in Old Port- Harcourt Township (Published)

This study rated neighbourhood quality indicators by residents of old Port Harcourt Township in Port Harcourt municipality, Nigeria. Neighbourhood indicators were studied in situ without experimental manipulation and at one period in time, i.e. the study adopted a passive-observational research design. The study utilized both secondary and primary data sources. Primary data were collected using face-to-face administration of a largely pre-coded household questionnaire, to a probability sample of 193 respondents, drawn from the 2 communities. Data analysis was based on responses from 193 questionnaires retrieved and the univariate analytical method was adopted. The study found that large percentage of residents reported a negative rating of neighbourhood quality indicators such as waste collection and disposal, safety of lives and property, fire stations, cleanliness of the neighbourhood, residential planning, government provision of housing for the poor, hospitals/clinics, recreational areas, maintenance of streets, aesthetic condition, noise level and the neighbourhood condition. Residents rated markets adequate and fire hazards low. The study concluded that majority of the residents rated neighbourhood quality indicators inadequate. The study recommended that government should intervene in these areas to improve the neighbourhood quality to achieve sustainability.
