Assessing OTM Lecturers’ Competencies in the Utilization of Website and Database Technologies for Electronic Records Management in Polytechnics in South-East Nigeria (Published)

The study assessed the competencies of Polytechnic office technology and management lecturers in the utilization of websites records and database records management Technologies in Polytechnics in South East-States Nigeria. Two research questions were answered and two hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. A total of 114 OTM lecturers in the eight government owned polytechnics (federal and state) in the South-East states of Nigeria made up the population of the study, and the population formed the sample for the study. The research instrument was a structured questionnaire comprising 25 items arranged in two clusters in line with the research questions. The instrument was validated by three experts and was used to collect data. Test of reliability on the instrument using Cronbach Alpha yielded coefficients of .849, .796, for clusters 1 and 2 respectively with general reliability co-efficiency of 0.85. Mean and standard deviation were used to analyze data relating to the research questions while t-test was used for testing the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Major findings included that majority of the polytechnic OTM lecturers in the South-East Nigeria utilized, at a high level, competencies in website records management technologies and competencies in database records management technologies. Again, they did not differ in their opinions on their level of competencies in the utilization of website records management technologies and competencies in database records management technologies. Based on these findings, the researcher recommended among others that OTM lecturers should engage in continuous professional development by enrolling in online certifications (e.g, Google Workspace), attending webinars and workshops on digital records and data management. OTM lecturers should collaborate and share knowledge from peer learning groups to share skills and solve real records management challenges together, especially in managing word processing records, and electronic mail records.

The Effect of Collaborative Learning Strategy on Office Technology and Management Students’ Academic Achievement and Interest in Office Management (Published)

The study was conducted to ascertain the effect of collaborative learning strategy on office technology and management students’ academic achievement and interest in office management.  Two specific purposes, research questions and null hypotheses were carefully developed to guide the study.  In carrying out this study, a quasi experimental design was adopted which involved both treatment and control groups to be used intact since no randomization was needed.  The population of the study comprised of NCE III students.  Two colleges of education were selected through a purposive sampling technique.  One group comprising of 34 students of both male and female was assigned to the treatment group and the other group made up of 26 students was assigned to the control group.  An instructional package was developed for each of the groups.  Package for the treatment group was the collaborative learning strategy while the package for the control group was individualized learning method.  Data were collected with the aid of two instruments namely: Office Management Achievement Test (OMAT) and the Office Management Interest Inventory (OMII).  Both instruments were validated and necessary adjustments made.  The internal consistency testing of OMAT using K-R20 yielded a reliability index of 0.94.  Also, Cronbach alpha of 0.94 was obtained from the reliability testing of OMII.  Data for the two research questions that guided the study were answered using mean and standard deviation.  On the other hand, the two hypotheses that guided the study were tested using ANCOVA.  The results revealed that collaborative learning strategy has a strong positive effect on Office Technology and Management Students’ Academic Achievement and Interest in Office Management.  Collaborative learning strategy, in this study, is better than the individualized learning method in enhancing both male and female students’ academic achievement and interest.  Therefore, the study recommended among others that curriculum planners should integrate the collaborative learning strategy into the office management curriculum because of its effectiveness in enhancing students’ academic achievement and interest in the course.  College management should train and retrain office management lecturers on ways of adopting and effectively using collaborative learning strategy in learning.

Entrepreneurship Competency Possessed by Office Technology and Management (OTM) Graduates for Self-Reliance (Published)

This study was carried out to determine the entrepreneurship competencies possessed by office technology and management for self-reliant in delta state. Two research questions guided the study with two null hypotheses which were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised all the office technology and management lectures in the three polytechnics in delta state, Nigeria. Due to the small size the entire population was used for the study. Cronbach Alpha method was used to determine the reliability of the items and a coefficient of 0.75 was obtained. The mean and standard deviation were used to analyse data relative to the research questions and equally determine the homogeneity of the respondent’s means. The t-test statistical tool was used to test the null hypotheses. Findings of the study revealed that entrepreneurial competencies and information and communication (ICT). Competencies are pre-requisite for graduate of office technology and management (OTM) programme for self-reliant and employability in delta state. It was recommended among others that office technology and management (OTM) educators should ensure that graduates of office technology and management (OTM) are highly exposed to different entrepreneurial competencies for self-employment and employability. Government should endeavour to encourage entrepreneurship by introducing element of entrepreneurship at all level of the educational system. Lastly management of the polytechnics should endeavour to equip office technology and management (OTM) department with the relevant facilities and equipment required for quality entrepreneurship competencies for the achievement of office technology and management (OTM) goals.
